CE Guidelines for Providers
CONTINUING EDUCATION (CE) PROVIDER REQUIREMENTS
(Revised August, 2017)
IT IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED THAT OPTOMETRIC CE BE OFFERED THROUGH THE OAL OR ONE OF ITS 9 AFFILIATED SOCIETIES ACROSS THE STATE SO THAT IT MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR CE CREDITS.
For complete information on license renewal requirements for Louisiana Optometrists, please refer to the Louisiana State Board of Optometry Examiners (LSBOE) website.
Any group, clinic, organization, or individual desiring to provide CE hours should be aware of the following:
I) Only general (i.e. non-TPA) CE hours can be obtained when offered outside of TPA-approved sources. TPA-approved sources are listed on the LSBOE website. Courses provided at local Society Meetings are counted as 1 hr GENERAL CE Credit.
II) PROOF of attendance of CE courses must be provided (NOTE: a flyer about the course is NOT PROOF, NOR is a
copy of the agenda). LEGIBLE, SIGNED documentation should include:
A) DATE OF COURSE
B) PROVIDER OF COURSE (such as a local OAL Society---DO NOT LIST SPONSORS AS PROVIDERS)
C) TITLE & DESCRIPTION OF COURSE (with sponsor, if applicable)
D) SPEAKER'S NAME
E) NUMBER OF HOURS CREDITED (typically, no more than 1 hr CE Credit is issued)
E) PRINTED NAME OF ATTENDING OD
F) ORIGINAL SIGNATURE OF CE PROVIDER OR OAL SOCIETY PRESIDENT
III) Attending ODs should be reminded that it is their responsibility to provide proof of attendance to the LSBOE.
IV) Practice Management and Jurisprudence courses are not accepted by the LSBOE as CE credit for license renewal.
V) An Optometrist cannot earn CE credits for courses that he/she teaches.
This document is provided as a general guideline for providers of CE to Louisiana Optometrists. Please also note that this document is simply a help reference and is in no way an endorsement of any CE course or speaker. The Optometry Association of Louisiana (OAL) cannot pre-approve and does not pre-certify any courses for CE. CE guidelines are established and enforced by the LSBOE (www.laoptometryboard.com), and the responsibility for CE acceptance lies with the individual Optometrist who must annually submit proof of approved CE hours to the LSBOE.
